If you want to break this cycle, one of the best ways is through support that explores what will change this cycle for you. This change must be at an individual level for it to be sustainable.

  • Being overworked and overwhelmed is normal for most nurses because of the physical and emotional realities they face daily. 
  • Our nervous systems respond to stressful clinical situations by going on high alert for extended periods of time, with hardly any recovery/restoration time. This can lead to a permanent state of dysregulation.
  • Trauma-informed care teaches us to assess ourselves for symptoms of dysregulation and to act on addressing them. A lack of attention will only lead to normalizing the abnormal.

  • Stress has become a normalized by-product of nursing in today’s healthcare climate. 
  • Many nurses are so tired at the end of their shift that this fatigue carries over into their home lives. Your job should not make you so tired that you don’t have any energy left after the workday.
  • Stress and fatigue often become cumulative and are related to factors such as demanding work environments, inadequate staffing, mandated shift work, and toxic workplace cultures. Unless addressed, these will lead to a state of chronic stress and exhaustion.

  • Chronic stress has been linked to major impacts on one’s life, such as burnout, unhealthy coping behaviours, and negative effects on nurses’ immune systems and quality of life. 
  • Chronic exhaustion can permeate every part of a nurse’s life, regardless of their role or workplace. The impact of this degree of fatigue shows up in various ways.
  • Maybe some of the following look familiar to you:
    • No energy to care for yourself, your loved ones, or anyone else
    • Your time off is spent caregiving for loved ones, leaving less time for you
    • Feeling too tired to go out and do the things you used to love to do
    • Health issues such as weight gain, chronic pain, and high blood pressure, and more

The unfortunate part of this situation is that nurses are experiencing emotional depletion on a massive scale. This is very real and often related to the demands of their workplaces. This state has been normalized, leading nurses to feel apathetic about their role in health care. More importantly, it may impact the nurse’s self-worth.

Transformational Processes

I developed a 7-step framework after seeing several nurse clients and identified common patterns of struggle across these clients. However, this framework is a guideline, not a prescription! I guide my clients through a unique opportunity for self-discovery and development based on several activities that lead to positive changes in mindset, beliefs, and emotional healing. Learning new coping skills, discarding negative habits, overcoming fears, and developing resilience are all part of this self-discovery…it is possible!
